Black Knight is an enemy in Shadow of the Erdtree.

Overview

The Black Knights are an order of knights who are devoted servants of Messmer the Impaler[1], serving as the primary force in his army. They were under the command of their first leader Black Knight Commander Andreas, a man of great strength who has command over the primordial powers of the Crucible.[2] Having absolute loyalty to their master, the Black Knights possess an iron conviction to their Crusade, and they never yield nor doubt their purpose.[3] Although the crest on their armour is a Scadutree design, it is etched in gold, as a consolation for those forced to wage a war without grace or honor.[4]

Wearing black armor ornamentally and etched in gold, they carry weapons and shields of black steel, decorated with golden embellishments, and are imbued with Erdtree incantations.[5] The Black Knights also seem to emit a rotten odor from their gauntlets and greaves. The cause may be from the tainted nature of the blood that stains their armor, or it may stem from their blackened souls, which fester as a result of endless slaughter.[1]

Despite their devoted loyalty, however, not all Black Knights serve Messmer without doubt; Black Knight Commander Andreas[2] and his son and second-in-command Black Knight Captain Huw[6], rebelled against Messmer, upon learning of his serpentine nature. For their betrayal, they were ultimately imprisoned in an underground tomb.
