Blind Swordsman
The Blind Swordsman (盲目の剣士, Mōmoku no Kenshi) is an unseen character in ELDEN RING (2022).
Overview
The Blind Swordsman was a master swordsman garbed in blue who, in legend, was bestowed a curved blade patterned after flowing water by a fairy depicted as a dancer in blue.[1][2] With this blade in hand, the Swordsman sealed away an ancient god that was Rot itself.[1] The divine essence of an Outer God is sealed away in the Lake of Rot in the Ainsel River below Liurnia of the Lakes.[3]
During the Age of the Erdtree, the Blind Swordsman encountered the young Demigod Malenia and became her mentor. Despite being born into the accursed rot, she gained wings of unparalleled strength.[4] In spite of this, Malenia would eventually abandon her pride and succumb to the Scarlet Rot in order to meet General Radahn's measure during the Battle of Aeonia,[5][6] resulting in the Swamp of Aeonia.
Notes
- The Blind Swordsman was also the originator of the Guard Counter technique, the art of allowing one's opponent to strike so as to leave them vulnerable to a well-timed reply.[7]
- The Blue Cloth Set belonging to the Warrior starting class bears a striking resemblance to the dancer in blue portrayed in the Blue Dancer Charm, which represents the fairy that bestowed the flowing sword upon the Blind Swordsman.[8]
- The blue color of the set symbolizes brisk waters, emphasizing flow, and stresses the need to remain ever drifting.[9] As such, the Blind Swordsman may be related to the nomadic warriors who wear the Blue Cloth set.
- The Flowing Curved Sword found in the Great Coffin in the Consecrated Snowfield likely belonged to the Blind Swordsman, both due to its name and the fact that its strong attack "unleashes a series of strikes akin to a dance, offering a glimpse into the legend."[10]
Notes
- The fairy that bestowed the flowing sword on the blind swordsman is sometimes speculated to have been the spirit of the Siofra River, 'Síofra' being an Irish name meaning "elf" or "changeling," derived from síobhra, the older Gaelic word for "elf" or "fairy".
