O Horn-deck'd beast, from higher sphere deliver'd. Take root inside the tower's sculpted keepers. We beg of thee to dance and cavort. And perch'd within, we beg of thee; rise.

- Hornsent Grandam

The Divine Beast Dancing Lion is an optional boss in Shadow of the Erdtree. The Remembrace variant may be encountered in the Belurat, Tower Settlement. The lion dancer at the Ancient Ruins of Rauh may be fought on Horseback.

Overview

Background

The divine beasts were messengers of the heavens.[1] The sculpted keepers are representations used to perform the ritual of the lion dance during the tower festival in Belurat, Tower Settlement. Only the greatest of horned warriors became divine beast warriors, and few became sculpted keepers.[2][3]

When Messmer the Impaler's army assailed the tower, the lion dance was turned towards martial ends.[1][4]. By the end of Messmer's Crusade, only two divine beasts remained: one inside of Belurat, and another in the Ancient Ruins of Rauh. The one in Belurat was under the control of Hornsent Grandam, who directed the divine beast to rest until the Impaler's forces returned so it could exact vengeance for her people. When a Tarnished Champion happened upon the divine beast's resting place, Grandam assumed them to be one of Messmer's prodigies and ordered the divine beast to slay the Tarnished. It failed to do so, however, and was slain. The Tarnished can also encounter and slay the other divine beast while exploring Rauh, putting an end to the divine beasts.

Moveset List
Wind Barrage Phase 1/2
Opens its mouth and emits a long stream of breath towards the player. In Phase 2, the wind is replaced with the corresponding element.

Strafe to the left or right to avoid the attack, and be sure to back up first if the attack is performed at close range.

Lunge Phase 1/2
Leaps into the air and crashes down towards the player.
Tail Whip Phase 1/2
Flips backwards into the air before striking the player with its tail.
3 Bite Combo Phase 1/2
Quickly bites twice and follows up with one more delayed bite.

Dodge backwards twice to avoid the quick bites and then time the third dodge carefully.

Lunging Bite Phase 1/2
Briefly stands up before lunging towards the player and biting them.
Spinning Lunge and Whirlwind Phase 1/2
Lunges towards the player while spinning in the air and then crashes onto the ground, then lifts its head out of the ground. After this, it starts emitting a stream of wind while spinning around for one full rotation.

Dodge or jump backwards when it lunges towards you, and dodge backwards when his head starts crashing towards you. Then, run away and wait for the whirlwind to start. Jump over the wind when it is about to hit you, then run towards the boss and attack while it recovers.

Whirlwind Phase 1/2
Stands up while creating wind in its mouth, then emits a stream of wind while spinning towards the player for 3 rotations.

Back up when you see the wind forming in its mouth, then be prepared to jump when the wind is about to hit you. Make sure to keep running away so you don't end up in close range where it is more difficult to dodge. Run in after the third rotation and attack while it recovers.

Devour Phase 1/2
Chomps twice before lunging at the player with its mouth open. If successful, the player will be chewed up and thrashed around before being thrown onto the ground.

This attack will inflict a unique debuff onto the player, where using a Flask of Crimson Tears will heal the boss for a percentage of its maximum HP, up to 15% with a fully upgraded flask. The debuff is removed when the Flask of Crimson Tears is used, or after 30 seconds have passed.

Dodge towards the boss when the lunge starts, roughly a second after the second chomp.

Elemental Switch Phase 2
Leaps into the air before switching to one of three phases: Lightning, Ice, or Storm. The Ancient Ruins of Rauh variant has an additional Death Blight phase.

This attack is performed when the boss reaches 65% HP, and does not pose much of a threat as long as the player isn't directly under the boss. However, the boss gains some new attacks depending on the phase and will modify most of its regular attacks.

Generally, the Lightning phase will spawn lightning pools alongside its attacks that strike after roughly 2 seconds. The Ice phase will have either frost spikes or a frost storm around the attack area that rapidly hits the player while they are inside, dealing low damage but quickly inflicting Frostbite. The Wind phase will generate a storm around its attacks, effectively increasing the attack radius. The Death Blight phase will spawn several Basilisks on phase transition and will inflict Death Blight.

Lightning Spear Phase 2 (Lightning)
Hurls a lightning spear towards the player, which additionally generates lightning pools around the impact zone.
Divine Beast Frost Stomp Phase 2 (Ice)
Lifts its foot into the air before stomping, creating frost spikes in a large radius around the boss. The physical stomp can hit you if you are very close to the boss.

Back up from the boss and jump to avoid the spikes, allowing for a jumping attack punish. Dodging will also work but the timing is strict.

Divine Beast Tornado Phase 2 (Wind)
Spins around in the air while forming a large tornado, then sends it towards the player.

Back up while the tornado is being formed, then run to either side to avoid the attack.

Rapid Elemental Phase Switch Phase 2
Performs the elemental phase switch attack into the Lightning Phase before quickly hurling a lightning spear towards the player. After a brief delay, it switches to the Wind phase and performs a spinning lunge, before crashing onto the ground. Switches to the Ice phase and stands tall before crashing its head into the ground, spawning frost spikes around the boss in a large radius.

Whenever the boss switches to the lightning phase, watch for the lightning spear, then dodge to the side and escape the lightning pool. Dodge forwards when the boss lunges towards you, and either run away or stand still to dodge the ground crash. Back up when the boss stands tall in the ice phase, then jump over the frost spikes.

Phase 1

The Divine Beast will fight normally in it's first phase.

Phase 2

At 65% health, it will switch between three elements on a timed basis: Lightning, Ice, and Wind. The Second Divine Beast also has access to Deathblight.

Notes

  • If the player opted to kill Hornsent Grandam prior to confronting the Divine Beast in Belarut, it will be shown that she survived the assault, resulting in a change to more desperate and weary voice acting in the Divine Beast's introduction cutscene.
