Greatswords are a type of melee armament in ELDEN RING (2022). They boast high damage and reach at a minor cost of attack speed and mobility.

With most of the one-handed regular attacks consisting of wide horizontal swings that cover a decent area in front of oneself, and the two-handed regular attacks being mostly vertical, as well as having Hyper Armor and dealing decent amounts of Poise Damage.

Moveset

The moveset mostly consists of slashes, with thrusts only on dual wield backstep attacks and certain greatswords' unique heavy attacks.

It's important to know when to use one-handed or two-handed light attacks, as the one-handed ones wide, horizontal swings makes catching evasive foes or hitting multiple ones easier, while the two-handed ones more vertical approach lets them hit slightly above the wielder and are much easier to use in close environments where other attacks might bounce off walls. The heavy attacks have the inverse of this, with one-handed heavy attacks and charged heavy attacks being overhead slams and two-handed heavy attacks and charged heavy attacks are horisontal sweeps.

Three greatswords have different two-handed light attacks: the Banished Knight's Greatsword, Knight's Greatsword, and Inseparable Sword have their light attacks alternate between horisontal and vertical slashes instead of the usual moveset's verticaly-only slashes. Some greatswords also have different heavy attacks: the Claymore and Greatsword of Damnation SOTE.png have thrusts for their one- and two-handed heavy attacks and charged heavy attacks, and their two-handed rolling attacks and crouching attacks, the Flamberge has unique one-handed heavy attacks and charged heavy attacks which are sweeps, the Marais Executioner's Sword has unique two-handed heavy attacks and unique heavy attacks which are overhead slams, the Sword of Milos and Death's Poker have unique one- and two-handed heavy attacks and charged heavy attacks consisting of underhand upwards-slash with an added run-up and halved Stance damage for the charged version.

Ashes of War

Note that the Lizard Greatsword SOTE.png has additional restrictions on compatible Ashes of War due to having a ranged projectile from its heavy attack and as such cannot use the following skills: Cragblade, Determination, Royal Knight's Resolve, Chilling Mist, Flaming Strike, Flame Skewer, Flame Spear, Lightning Slash, Sacred Blade, Sacred Order, Shared Order, Poisonous Mist, and Seppuku.

Greatswords are considered as "large swords capable of slashing and thrusting". As such, the infusable ones are compatible with the following Ashes of War:
