The Lake of Rot (腐れ湖) is a sub-region of the Ainsel River.
Overview
The Lake of Rot is a large cavernous area beneath Liurnia of the Lakes filled with rotting waters. The lake itself is littered with the crumbling remnants of an ancient dynasty. Within the center of the Lake of Rot are obelisks with stone pressure plates that when activated, raise platforms from beneath the lake, creating a pathway. In the southern part of this area, the Grand Cloister is found; a large walkway infested with rotted-flora and fauna.
The divine essence of an Outer God is sealed away in this lake[1], after it was defeated by a blind swordsman with a flowing sword.[2] The Servants of Rot have a presence here,[3] as a Mushroom Crown is found in the lake and the Kindred of Rot populate the Grand Cloiser.

Trivia
- In Game Version 1.00, there were no Kindred of Rot at the Grand Cloister, nor was the lonely Ancestral Follower Warrior present in the lake. Instead, the Grand Cloister featured a group of approximately six Rot Worshippers (rot-infused Ancestral Follower Warriors), and one rotten Ancestral Follower Shaman. The primary differences were that the Warriors had a stunlocking rot-breath ability, while the Shaman’s melee attacks inflicted Scarlet Rot. Additionally, the Putrid Tree Spirit at the far end of the area was always visible.
- It seems that early on in development an Ancestor Spirit was intended to be fought where Astel is, as the spawn data for them and their spirit animals can be found in the area, which might be the reason the rot-infused Ancestral Followers where placed there.
- Though Astel, Naturalborn of the Void was still there it was named Astel, Misbegotten of the Void (the Misbegotten were at the time referred to as Aberrations).
