The Lands Between (狭間の地, Hazama no Chi) is the name given to the main setting of Elden Ring. It is a vast realm formerly ruled by Queen Marika the Eternal.
Overview
The realm of the Erdtree, home to both the Golden Order and the countless cultures that came before it. The Lands Between is an insular landmass with diverse climatic conditions; it features lush grasslands in the south, a temperate central region, and a frozen, mountainous north. The skies of the Lands Between are dominated by the Erdtree, which is the physical manifestation of the Elden Ring.
The Lands Between were historically overseen by the vessel of the Elden Ring, Queen Marika,[1] and her consort, the Elden Lord. They ruled from the Erdtree Capital of Leyndell,[2] situated upon the Altus Plateau near the tree's base.[3]
It is said that, long ago, the Greater Will sent a golden star bearing a beast to the Lands Between, and that this beast later became the Elden Ring.[4]
The Primordial Crucible, where all life was once blended together[5], may also have existed in the Lands Between in the past, since it was the primordial form of the Erdtree.[6] Additionally, evidence of many other cultures, such as the Nox, the Fire Giants, and the Astrologers can be found throughout the Lands Between.
After the Elden Ring was shattered, the Lands Between became the site of The Shattering: a war between the Demigod offspring of Queen Marika.[7] As none of them succeeded in becoming Elden Lord, grace was extended to the Tarnished[8], who were called back to the Lands Between to seek the shards of the Elden Ring, so that one might become Elden Lord.[9]
Geography
The physiographic divisions of the Lands Between generally line up with the major regions of the realm:
- The pale green plains of Limgrave in the southwest.
- The sandy, reddened wilds of Caelid in the southeast.
- The mist-shrouded lakes region of Liurnia in the west.
- The golden hills of the Altus Plateau in the north.
- The volcanic Mt. Gelmir in the northwest; though technically a sub-region of the Altus Plateau, its geography and weather are quite distinct.
- The snow-covered Mountaintops of the Giants to the far northeast.
The entirety of the Lands Between has a crescent shape, with Caelid at one tip and Flame Peak at the other. The elevation increases as one travels from Caelid to the Mountaintops of the Giants; while the Wailing Dunes are at sea level, Flame Peak rises almost two thousand meters.[10]
At the center of the Lands Between is a large bay, which sits one hundred meters higher than the surrounding oceans. There is, as such, a one-kilometer-long waterfall stretching between the two ends of the realm.[10] Based on the message at the Suppressing Pillar, this may have once been the location of the Realm of Shadow before it was "sundered" and "hidden from the outside world" as described by director Hidetaka Miyazaki.[11]
The entirety of the map of the Lands Between has an area of about eighty-eight square kilometers; this includes the vast surrounding seas.[10] The area accessible by foot is less than a quarter of that size.[10]
The largest river on the surface of the realm is the Seethewater River, which starts on Mt. Gelmir and empties into the Lake of Liurnia via the Ruin-Strewn Precipice.
The geography of the Lands Between was significantly impacted as a result of the Shattering; during the Battle of Aeonia, Malenia, Blade of Miquella unleashed the Scarlet Rot on Caelid, introducing new flora and fauna to the region. This rot begat the Swamp of Aeonia, a frothing mire in the heart of Caelid. Additionally, the Deathroot - spreading from the corpse of Godwyn the Golden due to his assassination prior to the Shattering - has spread across the lands, appearing in villages in catacombs. The cliffs of Mt. Gelmir are also said to have grown sheerer in the wake of the war.[12]
