Map: Liurnia, West

Liurnia of the Lakes is a region in the Lands Between.

Overview

Map of Liurnia

The westernmost region of the Lands Between. Characterized by its boggy woodlands, sheer cliffs, and pervasive mists, much of the region is sinking into the Liurnia Lake. On the eastern side of the region, the Liurnia Highway runs north to south, connecting the land to the Altus Plateau and Limgrave. The western coast is closely associated with the royal family of Caria, as it is the location of their stronghold in Caria Manor. The Academy of Raya Lucaria rises above the lake in the center of Liurnia at a junction between two highroads, with the Academy Gate Town sprawling around its base as the buildings slowly sink into the waters.

Liurnia is mostly under the control of Raya Lucaria and its Knights of the Cuckoo. The Carians also maintain a presence at their manor and the Carian Study Hall. The Lunar Queen Rennala was master of the academy, but she is now locked in its grand library.[1][2]

History

In the Founding Rain of Stars, glintstone rained upon the land.[3][4] The founding glintstone sorcerers[5][6] Azur and Lusat - both of whom had seen into the abyss from which the rain came[7][8] - founded the most venerable Conspectuses at the Academy of Raya Lucaria.[9] The Academy itself was built on a massive glintstone deposit visible from below in the Lake of Rot, and the entire region of Liurnia is scattered with glintstone crystals. The mineral has since become central to the identity of the region.

House of the Moon

Rennala, once a young astrologer, walked with her eyes fixed on the night sky.[10] Though she had been infatuated with the stars, she encountered an enchanting Full Moon.[11] The bewitching power of her moon eventually propelled her to her mastery of Raya Lucaria. She also came to lead the Glintstone Knights and established the House of Caria.[12] In this role she anointed the Carian Knights and her house bestowed upon them Carian glintstone sorceries.[13][14] Her younger sister Rellana learned glintstone sorcery from Count Ymir before he turned away from his faith to the moon; Rellana and Rennala also discovered the Twin Moons, and the former learned to use incarnations of them.[15][16]

The grand estate of Caria Manor was home to the Carian Royal Family.[17] On the upper level of the manor there are the Royal Moongazing Grounds, which may have at one point allowed the Carians to gaze on the enchanting lunar body.

First and Second Liurnian Wars

The champion Lord Radagon of the Erdtree worshipers harbored territorial aggression, and his neighbors to the west came under attack in the First and Second Wars of Liurnia.[18] Radagon was at the head of these armies, and his glory was said to have been burning red.[19][20] However, the Enchanted Knights were well-trained and were a match even for the Erdtree's champions of gold.[21] Both wars were ultimately unsuccessful, and neither side claimed victory in the second war.[22]
