Melina is a mysterious, spectral girl who is the deuteragonist of Elden Ring. She offers an alliance with the Tarnished to help them on their journey.

Overview

Background

Melina was born at the foot of the Erdtree and describes her mother as within the Erdtree. Although it is never stated, it can be inferred that her mother is Queen Marika the Eternal. During Boc's questline she asks if "being born of a mother" means acting in certain ways, which makes the specifics of her origins unclear.

At some point, Melina's body was burned, which left her bodiless and as a roaming spirit with no memory of her purpose given to her by her mother. And so, she looked for a way to go to the foot of the Erdtree to ascertain her given purpose, and to be able to govern her movement, seemingly lost as a spirit, meeting and travelling with Torrent at some time.

Game Events

Melina is accompanied by the spectral steed Torrent when they both spot an adrift Tarnished whom she believes is fortunate. Some time later, she decides to approach and offer an accord to the maidenless Tarnished: she could play the role of the missing Finger Maiden in return for a ride to the foot of the Erdtree. The Tarnished is forced to accept if they desire the strength of runes, and, if they accept the accord, Melina entrusts them with the Spectral Steed Whistle and, therefore, Torrent.

When Melina starts travelling with the Tarnished, she advises to follow the guidance of grace and seek the demigod residing within Stormveil Castle. Once the Tarnished has felled the demigod, Melina confesses that she was testing the Tarnished to see if they truly possessed the guidance of grace and if they were fit for the challenges to come. Satisfied with her new companion, Melina offers to take them to Roundtable Hold, a gathering place for Tarnished champions. Throughout their journey, Melina also provides specks of guidance at certain sites of grace and, at churches dedicated to Queen Marika, she offers to reveal words spoken by Marika herself in the distant past.

Upon arriving at their destination, the Royal Capital at the foot of the Erdtree, Melina thanks the Tarnished for escorting her and leaves to ascertain her purpose, claiming that she can govern her movement more freely there. She entrusts the power of runes and Torrent to the Tarnished. She will also offer her aid should the Tarnished challenge Morgott, the Omen King, ruler of Leyndell and guardian of the Erdtree.

After defeating Morgott, the Tarnished finds the path into the Erdtree barred by thorns refusing entrance to all. Melina, having ascertained her purpose and seeing the Tarnished stuck, rejoins the Tarnished to say that she can burn the Erdtree to gain entrance inside, provided that she can get ahold of the Flame of Ruin. And hence, she asks to go on a new journey, this time to the flame of ruin, far above the clouds, upon the snowy Mountaintops of the Giants. and tells them she will take care of the "kindling" required to set the tree alight.

Defeating Morgott also opens up the path to the Three Fingers. If the Tarnished rests at the nearest grace from their entombment, Melina will warn against meeting them and insist against inheriting the Frenzied Flame, for it would end all lives and births, which she cherishes. If the player ignores her warnings, or just inherits the Frenzied Flame without speaking with her, she will say that The Tarnished is no longer fit, ending her accord, and forever leaving their side but threatening to kill them should they become Lord of Chaos. If the Tarnished instead heeds her warnings, Melina and the protagonist will continue their Journey for the Flame of Ruin.

When making their way to the Forge of the Giants, Melina clarifies that she is now acting of her own volition, regardless of the purpose that her mother gave her. After defeating the guardian of the flame, Melina puts her plan into action. She takes the Tarnished's hand, narcotizing them by doing so, and proceeds to sacrifice herself to channel the flame of ruin, setting the Erdtree aflame. The Tarnished, maidenless once more, wakes up at Crumbling Farum Azula, fulfilling the saying of the Blade of Calling: The one who walks alongside flame, Shall one day meet the road of Destined Death.

Questline Progression

Melina's questline runs parallel to the main storyline and thus must be completed to finish the game.

1. Limgrave
   • Activate two different Sites of Grace in the open world and then sit at one of the following Graces: Agheel Lake North, Agheel Lake South, Bridge of Sacrifice, Church of Elleh, Gatefront Ruins, Seaside Ruins, Stormhill Shack, or Third Church of Marika. You will trigger the first interaction with Melina. She will offer you an accord, allowing you to continue her quest.
     • Agheel Lake North and Gatefront Ruins will always summon Melina, even if two other Sites of Grace haven't been activated.
   • If you refuse her accord, you cannot enter Leyndell, Royal Capital, even with two Great Runes. If you refuse, you may always change your mind by selecting "Talk to Melina" at any Site of Grace.
   • If you accept, you will obtain the Spectral Seed Whistle, allowing you to summon Torrent.
   • (Optional) After accepting her accord, Melina may appear when you rest at Sites of Grace to offer the dialogue options "The Rays of Grace" and "Melina's Goal". These options will no longer be available once you progress to the next step.
2. Anywhere
   • Rest at any Site of Grace outside Limgrave or fight Margit, the Fell Omen at least once to trigger another conversation in which Melina will invite you to Roundtable Hold. Accepting this invite is mandatory to access Leyndell, Royal Capital later in the game.
3. Leyndell, Royal Capital
   • Resting at a Site of Grace in Leyndell will trigger another interaction with Melina, after which she will leave you. Her dialogue options at various Sites of Grace will no longer be available until after you have defeated Morgott, Omen King.
4. Leyndell, Royal Capital
   • (Optional) Melina may be summoned as a cooperator through her summon sign outside Morgott's boss room.
   • After defeating Morgott, approach the entrance to the Erdtree, and then turn back and rest at the Site of Grace. Melina will appear and after some dialogue, give you the Rold Medallion.
5. Mountaintops of the Giants
   • After defeating the Fire Giant and resting at the Forge of the Giants, you may talk to Melina. Speak to her and respond "I'm Ready" to end Melina's questline. You will not be able to hear any dialogue you may have missed.
   • (Optional) If you visit the Frenzied Flame Proscription and interact with the Three Fingers before selecting "I'm ready" at the Forge of the Giants, Melina will appear at the next Site of Grace you rest at and will leave you permanently. You will now have the option "Listen to the flames" when you Rest at the Forge of the Giants Site of Grace, allowing you to progress to Crumbling Farum Azula. This will unlock an additional cutscene in the Lord of Frenzied Flame ending.

Notes

• Melina's weapon is the Blade of Calling.
• As Melina says herself, she is not an actual "finger maiden": "I've acted the finger maiden yet I can offer no guidance, I am no maiden."
• There are hints in the game suggesting that Melina is another child of Radagon and Marika:
  • The Naming Convention: most siblings in the lands between share the first letter of their name, Melina/Malenia/Miquella would be no exception to this rule.
  • Hair Colour: Melina's hair colour seems to be a combination of Radagon and Marika's hair colours.
  • Butterfly Items: There are three butterfly items in-game, reflecting the three cursed children: (Nascent - Miquella | Aeonian - Malenia | Smouldering - Melina).
    • In Shadow of the Erdtree, another one is added: Black Pyrefly, which represents Messmer the Impaler, a son of Marika who, "much like his younger sister", bore a vision of fire.
  • Her internal name in the game files is "MaricaOfDaughter".
  • The cutscene that plays when meeting Melina for the first time calls her "daughter Marika".
