Miquella's Haligtree (ミケラの聖樹, Mikera no Seiju) is a region and legacy dungeon to the north of the Lands Between.

Overview

Map of the Haligtree

A holy tree created by Miquella off the northern coast of the Consecrated Snowfield. Miquella's Haligtree is a vast, misshapen[1] tree in the far north of the Lands Between. Miquella's vision for the Haligtree was never fully realized, and even in their beauty, the town and city brace are teeming with danger.

The Haligtree consists of two sections: the upper area is home to Haligtree Town in the canopy of the tree, and the lower area houses Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree, an immense fortress. While Haligtree Town is teeming with Misbegotten, Elphael is inhabited largely by soldiers and knights who serve Miquella and Malenia.

History

Long ago, the Empyrean Miquella abandoned Golden Order Fundamentalism, realizing that it could not treat the rot that plagued his sister, Malenia.[2] He used his own blood to water the Haligtree from a sapling, but nevertheless it failed to grow into an Erdtree.[3]

Despite this failure, the Haligtree came to be seen as a chosen land by the Albinaurics,[4] for whom the Haligtree was identified as a safe haven by the Carian Knight Loretta.[5] In time, the Haligtree became a haven for peoples who had been rejected by society, such as the Misbegotten. Those unchosen would make the pilgrimage to the Haligtree via the Consecrated Snowfield[6], accessible only via the Grand Lift of Rold to those in possession of a secret medallion.[7]

Miquella embedded himself within the Haligtree. However, he was abducted by Mohg[8] who wished to raise the Empyrean to godhood and become his consort.[9] Malenia, following her battle with Radahn, returned home to find her brother gone. She awaited him at the foot of the husk and, over time, the Haligtree became infested with the Scarlet Rot.[10]

Gideon Ofnir tried finding a way to the Haligtree. He sent his servants to the Village of the Albinaurics to look for the Haligtree Secret Medallion, hoping the inhabitants would harbor information or even be in possession of the medallion. The Albinauric Village was ravaged and many of its inhabitants were killed. However, old Albus - in possession of one half of the medallion - managed to hide in the likeness of a jar, and Latenna made refuge at the Slumbering Wolf's Shack. Her wolf was killed by Gideon's henchmen. One of Gideon's servants Ensha even makes an attempt on the life of the tarnished to snatch away any piece of the Medallion they might find, but his mission ends in failure.

Notes

  • "Hālig" in Old English meant "holy" and "sacred", so the name translates to "holy-tree".[11][12]
