The Near-Death state is a mechanic unique to ELDEN RING: NIGHTREIGN (2025) that provides the opportunity for a Nightfarer to come to their teammate's aid, ensuring that a fallen combatant is not permanently eliminated from the fight.

Overview

When a Nightfarer's HP is brought to 0, they do not immediately die, and are instead placed in a near-death state, and their teammates immediately alerted to this. In a near-death state, the downed Nightfarer cannot attack or use items, and can only slowly crawl about. Above their head is the ERN Icon Near Death Full.png Near-Death Gauge, a circle split into three parts indicating the amount of effort it would take to revive them.

Teammates can revive a fallen Nightfarer by attacking them. A successful revival is indicated by emptying out all highlighted parts of the Near-Death Gauge, bringing the Nightfarer back on their feet at half health. Being brought to near-death multiple times will increase the amount of effort required for a successful revival, but the penalties can be reduced either by staying alive for 3 consecutive minutes or fully reset by reaching a Site of Grace.

During the day, the teammates have 15 seconds to come to the fallen Nightfarer's aid, and any progress to revival will pause the timer. If this timer lapses, the Nightfarer dies, respawning nearby with a lost level and dropping all their Runes near their point of death. During a night boss or the fight against a Nightlord, this timer is absent, but if all three Nightfarers are near-death, they all die and the run ends in defeat.

When reviving fallen Nightfarers, the speed at which the Near-Death gauge is emptied is dependent on the type of weapon and the type of attack being performed, and is independent of the actual attack rating of the weapons or spell. The length of the gauge is measured in a unique value (referred to as "Revival HP"). Despite appearances, the Near-Death gauge is not evenly divided. A fallen Nightfarer with a single bar only has 40 Revival HP; two bars is 90 Revival HP, and the maximum of three bars is 240 Revival HP. If a fallen Nightfarer has not taken a hit from an ally in 3.5 seconds, their Revival HP will slowly refill, going faster depending on how many bars their revival requires.

If a near-death Nightfarer manages to get to a Site of Grace and there are no nearby enemies or active Night's Tide that would disable its healing properties, the Nightfarer is immediately revived with full HP and all their near-death penalties are fully reset.

Death and Revival

When a Nightfarer dies and respawns, they lose a level and drop all their Runes at their point of death. The dropped Runes include the amount of Runes required to regain the lost level, allowing a Nightfarer to quickly return to their former strength. While a Nightfarer has lost levels, the level display in the upper-left corner of the screen turns red to signify this, only turning blue once the Nightfarer regains the lost level.

Sometimes, the lost Runes can be collected by a nearby enemy, which will be marked by a golden glow on the enemy's torso. Defeating the enemy will return all the Runes to its owner. Any player can see that the enemy is holding the Runes, and can kill that enemy to return the Runes to their teammate.

If a Nightfarer dies again before they can reclaim their lost Runes, the Runes are lost for good, but a Nightfarer cannot lose more than one level through death. This prevents unfortunate players from being trapped in a downward spiral of constantly losing power through repeated deaths. If a Nightfarer drops below the level requirement to use a weapon (3 for uncommon, 7 for rare, 10 for legendary), they can still use the weapons they qualified for at no penalty.

Notes

  • The Wylder's Onslaught Stake and Ironeye's Single Shot Ultimates do exactly 90 Revival HP, which makes them excellent for instant revivals within the first two times their teammates are knocked out.
  • The Guardian's Wings of Salvation and Revenant's Immortal March Ultimates instantly revive nearby fallen teammates, regardless of the amount of effort needed to revive them normally.
  • The Revenant's Cursed Claws deal Revival HP equivalent to that of a Greatsword but attack much faster, making them great for quickly reviving downed teammates.
    • Any Non-Revenant teammate can equip the Revenant's Cursed Claws. While this doesn't do much damage to enemies, it does the same revive damage while also attacking faster, making it one of the best weapons for reviving.
