Gladius, Beast of Night is a boss in ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN.

Overview

GRS STEAM GIF03 TAKE ON THE NIGHT.gif

One of the Nightlords, Gladius is a ferocious three-headed dog encountered in the Spirit Shelter after surviving two nights in Limveld while undertaking the Tricephalos expedition. At the beginning the game, Gladius is the only target available for expeditions. After his defeat, six other Nightlords appear and become available.

In later phases of the fight, Gladius can split into three separate hounds to take on all three Nightfarers at once. The three hounds can also target a specific Nightfarer, which will be indicated by a red target appearing on that player.

Strategy

After dealing some holy damage Gladius will get debuffed, with its damage and armor reduced for a limited time. When the boss separates itself, holy damage can also stagger it easily.

For some players, a triple Ironeye composition is easier, with the tactic of attacking from affar, dodging its sword spin and using the Ultimate Art only to revive teammates.

Expedition Raid

The Tricephalos raid is only available in expeditions exclusive to The Forsaken Hollows DLC.

The Tricephalos appears by casting the entire map in flames that gradually sap away at the Nightfarers' HP. The flames will persist until the Nightfarers eliminate all three Sundered Tricephalos, marked on the ma with translucent red circles.

Each of the Sundered Tricephalos have relatively low HP and are faced alone. However, after the first of the trio is defeated, they will relentlessly send forth flame hounds that will harass the Nightfarers until all of the Tricephalos is defeated.

After defeating the Sundered Tricephalos, the flames dissipate, the hounds disperse, and the Nightfarers gain a buff that increases their stamina regeneration.

Notes

  • Gladius is referred to as Tricephalos when selecting them as a target from the Roundtable Hold, but in the fight itself they are referred to as Gladius.
  • Gladius was the only Nightlord available in the ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN Network Test.
  • In the ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN Network Test, the orange skybox in Gladius's fight was present as soon as combat began. However, in the full release, this skybox only appears after Gladius separates into three for the first time (ie. the first phase change.)

Trivia

  • Gladius' internal codename is "NocturnalCerberus"
    • "Cerberus" is a three-headed hound in Greek mythology whose job is to guard the gates of Hades and prevent the dead from escaping; Gladius' design takes clear inspiration from the legend.
  • "Gladius" is the Latin word for "sword", specifically, the sword used by Roman soldiers from the 3rd century BC to the 3rd century AD.
