Gnoster, Wisdom of Night, also called Sentient Pest, is a boss in Elden Ring: Nightreign and one of the Nightlords.

Overview

The secluded forest was being eaten away by the surrounding desert, and when the blessing of water passed over its many leaves and boughs, thus began a great exodus of its creatures.

To survive, the insects would have to adapt. So began their prolonged and perilous journey.[1]

Behavior

Phase 1

Gnoster takes the form of two entities that share a life bar: a moth and a whip scorpion. They act independently. The moth regularly showers the team with barrages of magic projectiles and sprays mist that inflicts poison, while the whip scorpion will mainly use physical attacks and damaging roars. If any player gets inflicted with poison by the moth's mist, a parasite appears on their neck doing damage over time. This parasite will hatch when the scorpion roars, doing 15 damage per second over 120 seconds, totaling 1800 damage. The parasite can be removed either by a teammate attacking their ally (as it can be locked on to) or by consuming a Neutralizing Bolus before it hatches.

Both entities are weak to fire. If the moth takes any fire damage it will continue to burn, taking fire damage over 15 seconds. If the scorpion takes enough fire damage, it will harden and turn passive for a time, taking 90% less damage but also preventing itself from being able to attack, leaving the team free to focus on the moth.

Phase 2

Once Gnoster falls to half health, both moth and scorpion unite and fight as one, and lose their unique behaviors should their fire weakness be exploited. The moth will perch on the scorpion's back and focus on one of the Nightfarers, first launching a magic beam that fires on their position (this attack lasts 10 seconds), before the scorpion begins charging while the moth unleashes a barrage of magic projectiles.

Strategy

  • General: Any fire attacks or spells will do the most damage to both enemies. If Gnoster infects someone with a parasite egg, it can be removed by either another player attacking it or by consuming a Neutralizing Bolus (the latter method only removes it if the egg hasn't hatched yet).
  • Wylder: Using Relics that set greatswords attack on fire after skill uses, and another skill to set the floor on fire with ult will help to do massive damage to any of both enemies.
  • Raider: The scorpion is weak to crushing weapons, so a Raider can do massive damage with Colossal Weapons or hammers.
  • Ironeye: If the team consists only of Ironeye, target Gnoster the Moth.

On Phase 2, when its HP drops to 50%, Gnoster mounts atop Faurtis and both begin fighting as one. Faurtis will unleash a damaging roar that marks the target of its phase transition attack, while Gnoster will prepare a large blue vertical laser. Once the laser begins firing, Faurtis will charge towards its target as Gnoster unleashes a barrage of magic projectiles. Faurtis will charge three times, turning to re-align with its target in between, and then finish off with a conical shockwave.

Expedition Raid

Gnoster announces its appearance by calling in swarms of locusts that attack the party. Across the map, the locusts will gather in locations that trigger small non-damaging explosions, which sap away at the Nightfarer's levels if they get caught in one.

After each explosion the swarms of locusts will travel off, moving in the general direction of Gnoster's location.

The Nightfarers are to track down Gnoster by following the locusts. Gnoster cannot be seen from a distance nor will it be shown on the map, but will be revealed once any Nightfarer comes close enough to it.

Defeating Gnoster gives the Nightfarers enough Runes to regain the stolen levels (in addition to the normal Rune rewards for defeating it) and bestows the party with a blessing that occasionally lets them gain a large amount of Runes when killing an enemy.
