The Numen are a faction in ELDEN RING (2022).

Overview

The Numen are the descendants of denizens from another world. They are long lived but seldom born.[1]

Background

The Numen are said to have come from outside the Lands Between from a place known only as 'the lands of the Numen',[2] and are in fact the same stock as Queen Marika herself.[3] The hammer with which Marika shattered the Elden Ring, and Radagon attempted to repair it, was made in the lands of the Numen.[2]

The Black Knife Assassins who murdered Godwyn the Golden during the Night of Black Knives were all women rumored to be Numen who had close ties to Queen Marika,[4] as well as scions of the Eternal City.[5]

Numen's Runes are dropped by certain Giant Ants found in Deeproot Depths. They can also be found at the Divine Tower of Caelid, in Mohgwyn Palace, and in Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree. One can also be picked up along with the Hoslow's Set and Hoslow's Petal Whip where Knight Diallos dies at the end of his quest.

The Tarnished can also have the features of a Numen as per the character creation screen.

Trivia

  • Localisation Notes
    • The Numen are said to be descendants of people from 異界 (Ikai), which can mean another world like the English localisation says, but can also mean the spirit world, underworld, or next world.[6]
    • The Numen are called 稀人 (Marebito), literally meaning "Rare Person."
      • 稀人 (Marebito) is an ancient Japanese word referring to a supernatural being who comes from afar, bringing gifts of wisdom, spiritual knowledge, and happiness.[7]
      • According to the Japanese folklorist Orikuchi Shinobu, Marebito were spiritual entities that periodically visit village communities from the "everlasting world" across the sea known as 常世 (Tokoyo), to bring their residents happiness and good fortune.[8]
        • 常世 (Tokoyo) means "eternalness; forever unchanging", and also "distant land over the sea" or "world of the dead."[9]
  • "Numen" is a Latin term referring to a spiritual force or influence often identified with a natural object, phenomenon, or place.[10]
  • The name "Numen" may be a reference to the Númenóreans from J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings series. The Númenóreans were long-lived humans that inhabited Númenor, an island realm off the western coast of Middle-earth, and were know for their incredibly long lifespans (centuries) and incredible height (averaging at 7 feet).
