The Realm of Shadow (影の地, Kage no Chi), also known as the Land of Shadow, is a veiled domain in the universe of ELDEN RING (2022). It is the setting of the expansion Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree.
Overview
A forbidden realm, hidden from view and excised from the annals of history.[1] The Realm of Shadow lies veiled in the Shadow of the Erdtree, known as the Scadutree.[2] It is the homeland of a people called the Hornsent; before the realm was enshrouded, the vitality of the Crucible, the primordial form of the Erdtree, flourished.[3][4] The Crucible is sacred to the Hornsent and is central to their culture.[5] The Realm of Shadow is also where the goddess Marika first set foot, and the place to which Miquella of the Haligtree departed, divesting himself of his flesh, his strength, his lineage, and all things golden.
Long ago, before the Shattering, the Realm of Shadow was set ablaze in a Crusade carried out by Messmer the Impaler on the orders of his mother, Queen Marika.[6] Messmer's forces sought to impale and immolate all those deemed impure.[7] At some point, however, Marika severed all ties with Messmer, and the Land of Shadow was hidden under the Scadutree to conceal all evidence of the purge.[8]
The Realm of Shadow is at the center of The Lands Between, a converging point for Death in all its forms.[9]
Access
The Realm of Shadow is accessible to the Tarnished only after defeating Starscourge Radahn in the Wailing Dunes of Caelid and Mohg, Lord of Blood at the Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum in the eastern Siofra River region. After defeating both of these demigods, the Needle Knight Leda appears near the Cocoon of the Empyrean in Mohg's boss arena. She tells the Tarnished to touch the withered arm in the cocoon, which will transport them to the Realm of Shadow.
After contacting the arm, the Tarnished emerges in a grotto under the Church of Benediction in the Gravesite Plain, with the Realm of Shadow free to explore.
Geography
The Realm of Shadow may be described as an island or a continent. Smaller islands are visible to the south, east, and west. Beyond those lie unnamed seas.
The topography of the realm is complex, characterized by many overlapping levels of verticality. Significant portions of the continent have no in-game map since they are located directly below others and therefore obscured. In general, the continent can be considered as a network of multi-layered plateaus separated by river canyons.
Much like its counterpart, the coasts of the Realm of Shadow consist mostly of near-vertical, extremely high cliffs. There are beaches along the Cerulean Coast, however.
Based on game engine measurements, the area depicted in the map of the Realm of Shadow covers almost twenty-nine square kilometers (about six kilometers from north to south and five kilometers from east to west.) The area of the actual landmass, not including vertical layering, is about eight square kilometers. At this size, the landmass as it stands is larger than the bay at the center of the Lands Between.[10] The lands' relative sizes have changed in the millennia since the Shattering.
