Usher of Death, Rosus (死の案内者ローゼス, Shi no An'nai-sha Rōzesu) is an unseen character in Elden Ring. Rosus is a mysterious figure depicted across all of the Lands Between attributed with guiding the dead. Statues in his likeness can be found throughout the overworld, and inside certain catacombs. It is unknown if Rosus is a real person or just a part of the Lands Between's religious iconography.
Overview
Usher of Death, Rosus is depicted as a hunched over, long-necked, and eyeless figure with a wrinkled face, dressed in a robe with drooping sleeves, and root or branch-like protrusions growing from his head that are reminiscent of a crown. He has five fingers, but only three toes, all of which appear to be clawed.
In his overworld statues, he holds a small dish in his right hand with a black material inside which functions as a candle when interacted with, creating a trail of light reminiscent of the guidance of grace which points the player to a nearby catacomb. In the version of his statues found in dungeons, he instead holds a torch in his right hand which shines a light on the ground, forming the sigil of Erdtree incantations.
Rosus is the guide and gatekeeper for those returning to the roots,[1] indicating that he is a protector of Erdtree Burial. He shows the path to the catacombs throughout the Lands Between, for the dead easily lose their way, and have always been in sore need of a guiding hand. As such, Rosus' Axe's unique skill, Rosus's Summons, summons those lost in death.[2]
Certain tombs contain shades which are untouchable until they are given form by Rosus' light.[3]
Game Mechanics
Interacting with his statues in the overworld will create a trail of light that leads the player to one nearby catacombs, which serves as a way to discover new dungeons and loot. If the dungeon has never been visited, an icon of the Rosus Statue will appear in the game's map with a blue arrow-like shape indicating the direction of the undiscovered dungeon.
A limited number of dungeons contain shades: shadowy versions of enemies that can't be hurt at all until they are touched by Rosus' light, which looks like a golden Erdtree symbol on the ground. Sometimes you need to find and activate the statues for the light to appear.
Statues of Rosus that emit light can be found in the following catacombs:
