ELDEN RING Shadow of the Erdtree is the first and only expansion for Elden Ring. It was announced on February 28th, 2023 on the game's social media accounts.[1] The first gameplay was revealed on February 21st, 2024.[2]
Shadow of the Erdtree was released on June 21st, 2024.

Guided by Empyrean Miquella, players are beckoned to the Realm of Shadow, a place obscured by the Erdtree and eradicated from all history.[3] It is here that the goddess Marika first set foot. In these strange new lands, players discover the dark secrets of the world as they meet others who follow in Miquella’s footsteps - some more well-meaning than others.[4]
The expansion is accessible to the Tarnished only after defeating Starscourge Radahn in the Wailing Dunes of Caelid and Mohg, Lord of Blood at the Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum in the eastern Siofra River region. After defeating both of these demigods, Needle Knight Leda appears near the Cocoon of the Empyrean in Mohg's boss arena. She tells the Tarnished to touch the withered arm in the cocoon, which will transport them to the Realm of Shadow. After contacting the arm, the Tarnished emerges on the Gravesite Plain, with the Realm of Shadow free to explore.

Development
Shadow of the Erdtree began development after Elden Ring was released. The story for the expansion was informed by ideas written by George R. R. Martin that did not fit into the scope of the base game.
The soundtrack for the expansion was written by returning Elden Ring composers Yuka Kitamura, Shoi Miyazawa, Tai Tomisawa, and Tsukasa Saitoh. Additionally, Soma Tanizaki, who previously worked on the soundtrack for ARMORED CORE VI FIRES OF RUBICON, composed several new tracks.
Reception
Shadow of the Erdtree is the highest-rated video game expansion of all time and the 54th-highest-rated general video game of all time on Metacritic.[6] Metacritic also rated it as the best game release of 2024.[7] The expansion received full scores from the Washington Post, IGN, and many other review sites.[8][9] It was nominated for Game of the Year, Best Game Direction, Best Art Direction, Best Role Playing Game, and Players' Voice at the Game Awards in 2024.[10]
