Skill: Square Off
Skill: Square Off is a Skill in ELDEN RING (2022).
Description
Acquisition
- Can be granted to infusable Straight Swords with the Ash of War: Square Off.
- Innate skill of the Broadsword, Cane Sword, Longsword, Lordsworn's Straight Sword, Stone-Sheathed Sword
, and Weathered Straight Sword.
Effect
The user holds their weapon close and level to the ground while pointed forward, assuming a combative stance. As a result, the user's movement speed decreases to a slow walk, and their Stamina regeneration speed is greatly decreased.
Inputting light attack has the user step forward and perform a guard-breaking upward slash, dealing 200% of the weapon's Attack Power.
Inputting strong attack has the user slightly duck under and perform a powerful running upward thrust, dealing 240% of the weapon's Attack Power.
If performing without the sufficient FP or stat requirements, the light follow-up attack deals only 120% of the weapon's Attack Power, and the strong follow-up attack deals only 155% of the weapon's Attack Power.

Boosting
- The Ash-of-War Scarab and Carian Filigreed Crest reduce the FP cost of Skills by 15% and 25% respectively.
- The Hammer Talisman boosts Stamina damage against guarded enemies by 40%
- The Spear Talisman boosts the damage of Counter Hits by 15%.
- Rellana's Cameo
grants a 45% boost to Attack Power to the follow-up attacks if the Stance is held for at least 1 second. - The Warrior Jar Shard and the Shard of Alexander boost Attack Power by an additional 10% and 15% respectively.
- The Warrior Jar Shard and the Shard of Alexander cannot be stacked together.
- This skill benefits from repeated-hits boosters like the Thorny Cracked Tear, the Winged Sword Insignia, the Rotten Winged Sword Insignia, and Millicent's Prosthesis.
- The Winged Sword Insignia and Rotten Winged Sword Insignia cannot be stacked together.
Strategies
- This is an extremely strong skill in PvE, primarily due to how quick and damaging the heavy attack follow-up is and due to it dealing 40 Stance damage, on par with a Great Hammer's charged heavy attack, and thus being able to break most enemies' Stance in 2-3 hits.
- Since this is a Pierce attack, it benefits from Counter Hits and the Spear Talisman.
- The light attack follow-up is good at breaking the Guard of blocking opponents, due to its 700% Stamina Attack Power multiplier resulting in at least 630 Stamina Attack Power before Guard Boost.
- The Stance can be cancelled without using a follow-up attack.
Trivia
- One of the returning skills from DARK SOULS III, where it was the Weapon Art of the Shortsword, the Longsword, the Broadsword, the Broken Straight Sword, the Astora Straight Sword, the Lothric Knight Sword, the Barbed Straight Sword, the Irithyll Straight Sword, Anri's Straight Sword, the Morion Blade, the Claymore, the Hollowslayer Greatsword, the Flamberge, and the Drakeblood Greatsword, where it was known as Stance.
- Stance could be found on Greatswords in DARK SOULS III, and was also a slower, more powerful variant.
