Staves are a type of catalyst in ELDEN RING (2022). They function as catalysts for casting Sorceries, and are required for doing so.

They generally scale with Intelligence, but there are also those that scale with a mixture of that stat and either Faith (Gelmir Glintstone Staff, Prince of Death's Staff, and Staff of the Great Beyond SOTE) or Arcane (Albinauric Staff and Maternal Staff SOTE), or entirely with Faith (Staff of the Guilty).

Staves have a base Stance damage of 3 for their melee attacks.

Moveset

Staves will actually perform a melee attack when hitting the heavy attack button, but due to their low Attack Power this will usually not be very useful.

Sorceries are cast by using a light attack when two-handed or held in the right hand, and by blocking when held in the left hand.

Ashes of War

Staves only have one compatible Ash of War, the Ash of War: Spinning Weapon, though they aren't a very fitting match for that one's skill.
