Troll

Troll is an enemy in Elden Ring.

Overview

Trolls are descendants of the Giants, who betrayed their ancestors during the war against the Giants and fought on behalf of the Erdtree. They can be found throughout the Lands Between, often fighting on behalf of various armies and factions. They have broad torsos, with cavities in their chests exposing growths akin to roots or branches, which conceal stone stabs that were seemingly embedded into them. Sometimes, stakes are lodged into these cavities, allowing the trolls to drag carriages along behind them.

Variant Description

Trolls who wield golden swords, which they will usually only draw after losing half of their HP.

Variant Description

Common trolls that can be encountered throughout the Lands Between, often seen in pairs, dragging carriages along behind them.

They are unarmed, and will mainly attack by stomping unless their chains are broken.

Variant Description

Trolls who wield greatswords embedded with blue glintstone. They are treated as true knights of Caria, having sworn an oath to Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon.

Trolls are one of the most common Strong enemy types, and can be found in nearly every part of the Lands Between. They're a diverse race with many variations depending upon where they are encountered, but all non-boss Trolls broadly fall into one of two categories depending upon whether or not they carry a sword. This is the primary factor which determines how they behave, both subtypes share a common unarmed moveset consisting of forward fist slams, horizontal arm sweeps, quick foot stomps and a leaping two-handed spike, in addition to which sword welding Trolls will perform a variety of slow and heavily delayed horizontal and vertical slashes as well as up to three consecutive dashing swings. They also have a long-range roar ability that launches a fast moving shockwave, and many of their melee attacks generate splash damage. Strategy Trolls have remarkably low defense, as well as several glaring weaknesses which help to mitigate the otherwise significant threat they pose. Most Trolls are susceptible to all common status aliments, and stacking both Poison and Scarlet Rot on them simultaneously can deplete as much as half of their health. Blood loss is also quite effective against them, but by far their greatest vulnerability is to Sleep, a single St. Trina's Arrow will sedate them, enabling you to either follow up with a high-damage Critical Hit, or attack them repeatedly during their long recovery animation and possibly inflict one or more of the other ailments. These indiscriminate brutes are capable of damaging other enemies or even destroying parts of the environment. Furthermore, if a Troll collides with a wall or other indestructible object during any portion of their dashing sword combo, they'll be left temporarily stunned and open to attack. In general, Trolls will take double damage from a hit to their heads, including while they're lying prone on the ground when asleep or after having their Stance broken this can be exploited using either melee attacks or projectiles, but is not applicable to Troll Knights because their heads are protected by helmets of sturdy plate (nor, for obvious reasons. does it apply to the headless Troll Knight Phantoms) Striking a Troll in the head will temporarily stun them, following which they'll raise their arm in a mostly ineffective attempt to shield their face from further damage they will still attack you during this time if you get too close, but will otherwise spend the next several seconds simply strafing back and forth, affording you time to line up a second shot if you aim carefully. Trolls frequently leave themselves open due to their slow, ponderous movements and long windup or recovery animations. Their only real answer to close-range pressure is their stomp, which they can repeat several times in quick succession and will use it to drive you out of their blind spots, their other moves are heavily telegraphed and in some cases deliberately delayed, offering many opportunities to damage them even if you're using a larger weapon. Almost all of their attacks-both armed and unarmed-can be avoided simply by sprinting or rolling forward through their legs, although bear in mind that their slowest moves also tend to have the best tracking and must be dodged late in their animations, or may require multiple evasive maneuvers such as dashing between the Troll's legs to avoid the first hit and then rolling a few moments afterward to avoid the second. When fighting them with spells you can simply wait for them to attack, then sprint away and begin casting as they recover, you can also lock off and free-aim a spell or projectile directly at the Troll's head. Despite the visual effects generated by some of their attacks, Trolls wielding fiery blades have exactly the same reach as those equipped with ordinary swords, even with attacks that generate splash damage.
