Straight Swords
Straight Swords are a type of melee armament in ELDEN RING (2022). They boast decently quick attack speeds, with reasonable range and area coverage for said speed. Their movesets are consistently very versatile and easy to use, particularly when one-handed and dual-wielded. Two-handing may be slightly less reliable compared to the other ways of using them, but its increased poise-damage still gives it uses in certain situations.
Overall straight swords pair exceptionally well with shields and most other weapon classes in general, as their regular attack's wide and fast horizontal swings help cover for potential shortcomings that other weapon movesets might face.
They also have exclusive access to the Skill: Square Off, a strong and versatile stance skill that easily breaks open blocks with its light attack version and that quickly breaks enemy Stance with its heavy attack version, leaving even bosses open for a Critical Attack within 2 or 3 hits.
Moveset
The moveset mostly consists of slashes, with thrusts on every odd one-handed heavy attack, light rolling attack, every third dual wield attack, and dual wield backstep attacks.
It's important to know when to use one-handed or two-handed light attacks, as the one-handed ones wide, horizontal swings makes catching evasive foes or hitting multiple ones easier, while the two-handed ones more vertical approach lets them hit slightly above the wielder and are much easier to use in close environments where other attacks might bounce off walls.
Some straight swords have different standing heavy attacks: the Short Sword always makes thrusts instead of alternating between thrusts and slashes, the Broadsword and Cane Sword has only slashes on their heavy attacks (and their rolling light attack, which most notably also comes out slightly quicker than normal), the Warhawk's Talon that hits twice with its first heavy attack (both the first and second if charged), the Lazuli Glintstone Sword and Carian Knight's Sword both can block when making or charging their heavy attack in exchange for weaker Stance damage, and the Miquellan Knight's Sword has a dashing slash which goes further when charged.
