Limgrave

Welcome to The Lands Between. You are now in Limgrave.

The first NPC character is right in front of you: White Mask Varré. Talk to him to start his questline. He will call you maidenless(!) and tell you to seek the Roundtable Hold for help... and that's it. (You don't have to do anything else for now. He will eventually go away from that location after some time and his questline will continue somewhere else.)

Backstory:
The Golden Order is supposed to give every Tarnished a Finger Maiden, and she is supposed to guide her Tarnished down the path of to become Elden Lord. You seem to be the exception, though. Was the murdered Finger Maiden at the Chapel of Anticipation supposed to be yours? Who knows... Only the fact remains: you ARE maidenless now.

As you can see in the picture, in front of you is a very menacing high level boss. You are supposed to ignore it now and come back when you are about level 40 or so. (It can technically be killed now, with your initial equipment and level, but it will take you a long time and many tries. It's better to come back later.)

Your first objective should be to reach the worn down church you can see on the distance. Just sneak around and try to not get caught by the boss.

Church of Elleh

Inside the chapel you will find 1) a grace, 2) a merchant with a red hat, 3) an anvil.

This is the inside of the Church of Elleh

First, touch the grace. Graces will refill your health. You can also teleport to them at any time, which will save you a lot of time when travelling.

Secondly, talk with Kalé. He sells a lot of useful items but you will most probably want the Crafting Kit. Only he sells it and enables crafting, which can be useful every now and then. (your probably wont have a lot of runes now, so you can come back later for it, Kale will always be here for you)

Finally, the anvil in the back of the church lets you upgrade your weapons (though only up +3 (with Smithing Stone 1s) or +1 (with a Somber Smithing Stone 1) and only if you got the materials). The main recommendation is to hoard a few upgrade materials and only upgrade the weapons you are comfortable with.

Map Fragments and Leveling Up

If you open your game-map you will notice that it is dull and grey. To turn it into an actual map you need to find a Map Fragment. All map fragments in the game are indicated in your map with this icon: Map Fragment Icon.png. It also shows you the main road to get there.

You can see the map fragment obelisk in the map, it also shows you the main road to get there.

Let's go north to get it. There are a few enemies in between. Take care of them or sneak past them. You will eventually find an enemy camp.

Before doing anything rash, first go to the Site of Grace located to the left.

The map fragment is in the middle of an enemy camp, so it is better to first rest at the Grace nearby.

If you have followed the guide, you will get a visitor once you touch the Gatefront Grace. Pay attention to her. After speaking to her, you can now level up and ride your trusty spectral steed Torrent (by using the Spectral Steed Whistle item you just received). To try out your new steed, let's take a little detour, to our first dungeon and to kill our first boss. This will also unlock our ability to summon.

First Dungeon

Go back to the Church of Elleh (you can simply teleport there by clicking it's grace on the map). Right outside of the church, behind the wall with the anvil, you will find a statue of Rosus. These statues exist to point you the way to the nearest catacomb/dungeon. If you interact with the statute, a blue beam will point directly to the entrance so that you can deduct a path to get there. With Torrent you will quickly get there.

From the Church, take this approximate route. Look for a door in the mountain's wall.

In the entrance to the Stormfoot Catacombs you will see a Stranded Soul. These are just ghosts that usually tell you a little bit more of the story of the surroundings. While inside a dungeon you will notice that you cannot teleport to any grace unless you walk outside by yourself or defeat the boss at the end.

Most dungeons just require you to explore them until you find a lever that will open the door to the boss room. So, go on ahead and explore the dungeon. I will be waiting for you until you kill the boss and claim its loot.

Dungeon Hints:
The flamethrowers in this dungeon can be deactivated by hitting them (with your sword, a throwing dagger, magic, etc.). Hitting them again will reactivate them.
In this dungeon you are supposed to find a ladder that goes to the third floor. From the third floor, drop to the second floor. The lever you have to activate is in the middle of the second floor. Notice that there is other loot that you can find in this dungeon besides the lever and the boss.

After finishing the dungeon you will have some runes to level up or to buy stuff from Kale, and new ashes to summon. To learn to use the ashes, we will have to return to the Church of Elleh once more, this time at night. (To make sure it is at night, rest at a Grace and hit the the Pass Time option).

Earning the Ability to Summon

Go to any grace and set the time to the nighttime if it isn't already. Now, open your map and teleport to the Church of Elleh.

If you have followed this guide and if you have used Torrent a few times, you will find a new visitor. Speak to her to receive the ability to summon.

How to Summon

Remember, you can only summon spirit ashes when this blue icon appears on the left of your screen. Most of the bosses in the game allow you to summon ashes. To use them, just equip (like any other object) the summon you want and click on it.

If you missed the in game tutorial for the summons, you can re-read any tutorial slides at any time by clicking start -> inventory -> Info Items; or you can just simply check our Tutorials page.
